University Bike Patrol
On October 9, 1995 the University of Missouri-St. Louis Police Department established a bike patrol unit and incorporated it into the daily operations of the department. Currently there are 3 officers assigned to the bike patrol, which operates on two shifts year-round, weather and manpower permitting.
The members of the Bike Patrol are:
Sergeant Tom McEwen
Officer Brandon Burton
Officer Daniel Contarini
Officer Jerry Gentry
Officer Steven Zeilinski
The officers have been trained and are certified as Police Bicyclists by the International Police Mountain Bike Association. During the training, officers are pushed to the limit of their physical fitness and endurance during several long rides in the St. Louis area. Officers are trained in use of quick dismounts, handling rapid response, adapting to terrain, physical confrontation and takedown with use of a bike, and navigation of rugged and varied obstacles. The officers are also trained on how to work effectively with a bike partner, as well as how to ride safely in large crowds and heavy traffic.
The Bike Patrol offers a more visible way to patrol the inner areas of the campus, sidewalks, quads, and parking lots. The officers can respond more quickly in some cases because they can cut across the campus. Officers on bike patrol are capable of performing all essential patrol duties.
The Bike Patrol is a major part of the department's community policing philosophy and has been very popular with the campus community. The increased visibility and accessibility of the officers has helped to improve the feeling of safety on campus to the students, faculty and staff. Each year the Bike Patrol Unit patrols several thousand miles on campus, as well as answer radio calls and assist the other police units. The Bike Patrol is also utilized several times a year for special events, such as the Chancellor's picnic (Mirthday), graduations, and the St. Louis Moonlight Ramble.
